About Stickhandling Dynamics
Innovative Stikchandling Program
The Stickhandling Dynamics program at X7 Hockey is a revolutionary stickhandling training program, crafted to significantly enhance a player's abilities on the ice. Inspired by the evolution of Russian hockey and the wisdom of legendary players, this program melds historical techniques with modern-day skills, making it ideal for the dynamic nature of contemporary hockey.
Set Up Positions
Mastery of various on-ice positions is essential for effective play. We focus on training players in crucial positions like between the feet, forehand, quarter, crossbody, and backhand, ensuring they are well-equipped to set up fakes and dekes effectively.
Reaches
Our program places a strong emphasis on improving puck control through various reach exercises, including lateral reach on both the forehand and backhand, and full lateral reach. This training is specifically designed to enhance the player's ability to control the puck, even when it's extended away from their body.
Fakes
Players are taught to execute fakes from all setup positions and at different angles. This includes a variety of maneuvers like foot-to-foot fakes, pull-backs, fake shots, and side fakes, providing them with an arsenal of strategies to outsmart defenders.
Toe Work
Developing confidence in toe work is a crucial aspect of stickhandling. We train players in heel-toe movements, toe pulls, and pull-ins, focusing on the finer details of controlling the puck with the toe of the stick blade.Advanced Techniques: As players develop a strong foundational skill set, we introduce them to advanced techniques that combine multiple stickhandling skill sets, such as pull in/push outs and forehand/backhand slip-throughs. This ensures a comprehensive development in their stickhandling abilities.
Heads Up Hockey
A significant focus of our program is enabling players to maintain their awareness on the ice. This involves combining footwork with puck handling training, enabling players to react swiftly and make smart decisions during game situations.
Homework
Our Stickhandling Dynamics program also includes a critical homework component. Each week, players receive assignments focused on dryland stickhandling, which they are expected to practice for around 30 minutes four times a week. This routine reinforces on-ice training and is essential for mastering the nuances of stickhandling.
Players submit their assignments weekly, fostering a sense of accountability and motivation, and ensuring that they continuously improve their skills and confidence on the ice.

"As a D1 hockey player, I didn’t think there was anything I couldn’t do on skates… until I trained with John and X7! John taught me to turn, skate, and shoot in ways I didn’t even know were possible. It was exhilarating to feel challenged again. John also shared the “why” behind each drill to help me apply what he taught me to a game setting. Thanks to X7, I went into my last season of college hockey feeling more confident than ever before."
